With hundreds of prominant global leaders calling for nuclear disarmament, there is a renewed focus in the media and policy arenas on the astounding threat nuclear weapons pose to humanity. But shrouded in secrecy, no one knows exactly how large the world’s arsenal of mass destruction really is. In an effort to illustrate the scale of the problem, National Geographic produced the above illustration, showing “instantly available launch devices — missiles with nuclear warheads installed and ready to fly or drop.” For more information, see the website of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN).
