Dr. Political Minefields

After three and a half years, I have finally finished my PhD in government from the London School of Economics and Political Science, which researched the politics of mine action.

I would like to thank my examiners, Dr. Kristian Berg Harpviken and Prof. David Keen for their detailed critiques and mercy in passing me without requiring revisions. I also want to thank my supervisors, Prof. Mary Kaldor and Dr. Vesna Bojicic-Dzelilovic for being such wonderful mentors over the years.

However, most importantly I want to express my appreciation to the mine action community.  Many of you took time out of your busy lives to provide information, interviews, data and critiques.

For those of you who are interested in the research, some of it can be found on this website, by clicking here. I am in the process of abridging the PhD for publication as a book — “Foreign Aid and Mine Clearance: Governance, Politics and Security in Afghanistan, Bosnia and Sudan” — by IB Tauris.  It will probably come out in late 2009.  I will also post an abstract of the PhD in my next blog post.

Thanks again to you all,

-(Dr!) Matthew Bolton
