Britain Agrees to Demine Falklands/Malvinas

Under considerable pressure from other signatories of the Mine Ban Treaty, the UK has announced that it will begin demining the Falkland/Malvinas Islands. (Read an AFP story here).

Last week the International Campaign to Ban Landmines had called attention to the UK’s violation of the ban convention as they had made no plans for clearance, which is required by Article 5 of the treaty.  See my earlier post on this.

Many islanders feel that demining is unnecessary and costly, given the low human impact of the minefields.  In partnership with UK-based charity Landmine Action, they suggested the UK government clear an area equivalent to the mined area in the Falklands/Malvinas in a more severely mine-impacted country, as a “humanitarian fine.” However, it appears this proposal has not been given much weight, given that the Mine Ban Treaty requires all country to become ‘mine free.’
