Reports of Possible Russian Cluster Munition Use in Georgia

There have been several vague press reports of possible Russian use of cluster munitions in Georgia.  See this article from Associated Press, this one from from a Polish news source and this Human Rights Watch report condemning Russia’s use of ‘indiscriminate’ rockets with the capacity for cluster munition warheads. Please note that Political Minefields has not independently confirmed these reports.  They are cited here to encourage further investigation.

Even if cluster munitions have not been used, it is likely there will be a considerable unexploded ordnance (UXO) problem after fighting ends in Georgia.  In other conflicts, such explosive remnants of war have continued to kill and injure civilians long after the guns fall silent.
